International Women’s Day is the perfect occasion to shine a light on the remarkable women making strides in industries where they have traditionally been underrepresented – such as construction.

Today, we celebrate two inspiring women at Littlewood Group: Jess, a Learning and Development (L&D) Coordinator and HR Administrator, and Marissa, an Office Administrator. Their journeys emphasise the importance of work-life balance, supportive workplaces, and career growth opportunities for women in construction.
Jess’ Journey
Before joining Littlewood Group, Jess worked for a teleradiology company where irregular night and weekend shifts made balancing work and family life extremely challenging. Although remote working provided some flexibility, the unpredictable schedule left her exhausted and disconnected from her two young children.
The turning point came when Jess’ husband – a fencer at Littlewood Group – discovered a vacancy for an L&D Coordinator and HR Administrator. The role offered structured hours and a company culture that valued family life.
Work-Life Balance Makes All the Difference
Littlewood Group supported Jess’ transition by allowing her to start later in the morning. This small yet impactful adjustment meant she could take her children to school and enjoy quality time with them – something she had not been able to do for years.
With a clear distinction between work and home life, Jess found herself re-energised. She describes feeling “welcomed right away” and has since rediscovered her passion for her career, demonstrating that a flexible, supportive workplace can be life-changing for working mothers.
Marissa’s Path
Marissa joined Littlewood Group in September 2022 as an Office Administrator. Her journey began with Little Gate Farm, a local supported employment charity that helps adults with learning disabilities and autism prepare for paid employment.
After completing a Level 2 Business and Administration Apprenticeship and excelling in a two-week trial, Marissa secured a permanent role at Littlewood Group. Initially responsible for administrative tasks such as document shredding and email management, she quickly proved her capabilities and took on more responsibilities.
A Vital Role in the Company’s Growth
Today, Marissa plays an essential role in managing the company’s training processes, monitoring training expiration dates, and assisting with project paperwork. Her work ensures smooth operations and contributes to the company’s long-term success.
Her journey is a testament to the importance of fostering an inclusive workplace that provides opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to thrive.
